Catrinas en Mi Ciudad

12:00PM-6:00PM | Saturday, October 19 | Sculpture Park at the Denver Performing Arts Complex (1736 Speer Blvd.)

All Are Welcome

Catrinas en Mi Ciudad is an immersive, outdoor, art exhibit inspired by Mexico’s Día de Muertos. Larger-than-life art pieces by internationally acclaimed costume and set designer Ricardo Soltero will be showcased, along with original monumental pieces created by Cooperativa Jaen Cartonería from Mexico City will be displayed. The free event will provide a day filled with art, culture, and celebration to the Mile High City and to the grounds of one of the city’s most symbolic arts venues. The event will also feature the work of several Colorado Latino artists who through their own art form and technique share some of Día de Muertos most special traditions.

Catrinas en Mi Ciudad invited artists are Ricardo Soltero and Cooperativa Jaen Cartonería.

Ricardo is originally from Nayarit, Mexico and he is known for his great talent designing sets and costumes. He is behind major productions and cultural celebrations in California, such as the Día de Muertos event at Hollywood Forever Cemetery and the Bésame Mucho Music Fest in Los Angeles.

The Cooperativa Jaen Cartonería was born in 2011, as a family project with the aim of spreading and preserving the tradition of the Day of the Dead which consists of taking the street as a means of artistic expression for the exhibition of monumental cardboard pieces. The work of Jaen Cartonería has received national and international recognition due to the type of pieces they build, as well as the theme they address each year.

Among the activities, there will be sugar skull decorating for kids and live music performances.

The event will be a culturally inspired experience that honors, celebrates, elevates, and promotes Mexican art and culture. The event will bring to Denver larger-than-life Catrinas (skeletons) and monumental skulls for an immersive experience that will activate all the senses with a culturally competent lens and showcase the beauty that exists in one of Mexico’s most celebrated holidays, one which celebrates life.

Catrinas en Mi Ciudad is a way to share the rich cultural and artistic traditions of Día de Muertos with the Denver community. Creating connections and conversations, the immersive experience hopes to inspire and pay tribute to the beauty of the Día de Muertos celebration.
